Biography

Celia S. Friedman was born January 12, 1957 and, like many writers, her love of reading began as a young child. By the age of 10, she had already discovered the joys of science fiction, starting out with Isaac Asimovís Earth is Room Enough. Little information is available about Friedmanís childhood, but she admits to participating in college varsity fencing and rapier fencing. She has choreographed sword fights for and participated in renaissance festivals. Until recently, she taught Costume Design in northern Virginia at a private university. Friedman also designs period dress patterns, some of which have been published by Medieval Miscellanea.

Relatively new to the science fiction scene, Friedmanís first novel, In Conquest Born, was published in 1986. Oddly, it was never intended for publication. It began as an outlet for Friedmanís urge to write, written in bits and pieces over a number of years. It wasnít until the story continued to grow and take shape that Friedman realized it had publication potential.

Friedmanís parents are both deceased, but she has one younger brother. Her dust jacket claims that she lives with several large cats and various bits of antique clothing.

Writing Style

Friedman credits Asimov, Robert Silverberg and Cordwainer Smith (among others) with influencing her writing style and her love of the science fiction genre. At this point, Iíve only read Friedmanís most recent book, This Alien Shore, so it is difficult to speak knowledgeably about her writing style. Based on this book, and reviews Iíve read on her other stories, Friedman seems to write on a number of levels. It is certainly possible to read her work merely for the story, however, you would be missing much of the depth and philosophical ideas woven into the plot lines. Although Friedman introduces some complex ideas and technologies in her novels, she discusses them in a way that is not overly technical or confusing to the ordinary reader. All in all, I think this is an author well worth keeping an eye on for future publications.
